Single Mother Seeks Help

A Letter of Appreciation

It’s every single mother’s dream to provide for her children, and protect them. From early on I knew I wanted to be an example for my children! To show them when life hands you struggle you persevere with persistence and positivity. In 2014, I decided to go back to school for a degree in accounting. I was finally at the point in my life where my daughter no longer feared babysitters, and I was moving into a new home with help from a resource in Greensburg called Feeding the Spirit where I went on Thursday nights to receive a warm meal and prayer when I was down. It was there I met an amazing women named Debbie who I confided in about going back to school, and attempting to make something of myself. She was excited for me and mentioned that Feeding the Spirit had a scholarship  to help with books and supplies for people like me to help reach my goal. I was so grateful not only for the help, but for the peace of mind it gave to have people really care. Feeding the Spirit provided me with a laptop that helped me through my bachelors in psychology.

Fast forward to thanksgiving of 2017; my mother had just died unexpectedly. I was her primary care giver, my world was shattered again, because my job with my mother allowed me to go to college and stay home with my 2 year old son. Not only did I lose my mother, I lost the one resource I had to not be dependent on the state. Here I was again a single mother of two small children who couldn’t afford to keep the home that her children had grown accustomed to. I was forced as a full time student and mother to make a choice and had to downsize dramatically, and move somewhere cheaper because I made too much money to be eligible for any assistance. It’s a hard pill to swallow when you work yourself to the bone to make a difference in your life, only to have so many doors close in your face. I only made $1600 a month after my mother died, and the state deemed that I made enough to support my family of 3 without their assistance. I was left to wonder how I was going to feed my kids, pay rent, and pay all my bills. How would I finish my last semester of college? It was then that my sister handed me Debbie’s number from Feeding the Spirit again and they helped me with the deposit for my new downsized home. Feeding the Spirit also offered me help with college again through the resources they had. I could finally take a breath and be grateful that there are people like the ones at Feeding the Spirit. Without the resources they provided, I wouldn’t have been able to finish my last semester and go to grad school. I plan on obtaining my degree in psychology to working with soldiers with PTSD. One small act of kindness can lead to an even bigger one! I would like to say thank you to Feeding the Spirit for what you did for me. It might have been small in retrospect, but it made a big difference in my family’s life.

Sincerely,

Restored faith/ Future Donor
